Who were the Illuminati and that it is credited with such extraordinary powers?

German philosopher Adam Weishaupt together with Baron Adolph von Knigge, a German Freemason, started the Order of Illuminati. One of their agenda was to bring down the Roman Catholic Church, conquer just about all nation’s governments and established one government that will rule them all. This seems very evil.
